|
|
Hi, I have a WD 80MB hard drive that is capable of UDMA mode 5 - I also have
a MSI mboard capable of mode 5. For some odd reason though, the drive is
stuck in mode 2. Initial bootup (bios display) shows mode 2 as does winXP.
Any ideas on how to get the HD into mode 5?
Thanks,
Bob |

Use an 80 wire ribbon cable. |

If you're already using one, put it on the right
way around, the correct end on the motherboard. |

Hmm, here's a few ideas:
* Make certain you are using a 80 conductor cable. Also make certain the
cable has no devilish creeses, or rips. Check the cable integrity.
* If you have a slow, old PIO mode hard drive or CD drive on the same
channel, isolate it from the IDE chain.
* Make certain the drive is jumpered correctly (Western Digitals should be
set for single master).
* Check CMOS settings - Make certain that UDMA is set to on and that
PIO mode is set to auto.
* Finally, some hard drive manufactures make special utilites that allow one
to set the drive operation to certain threshhold levels, such as quiet,
performance,
UDMA off, etc. Visit the makers web site.
Try it on the Secondary IDE channel and see if you get the same performance
from the drive.
Hope this helps,
