|
|
Hi there!
I got a Sun Ultra 10 today, but somehow that machine doesn't want to
boot properly. There appears to be no videosignal form teh onboard
Graphicscard as well as on the additional fullsize Graphicscard.
In my view strange is: When i switch on the powersupply on the back teh
machine already starts. Pushing the powerbutton on teh front does just
nothing.
Nevertheless the keyboard beeps, and the caps lock goes on/off/flashes a
few times. Non of the other LED's keeps lit. So i guess it does at least
some kind of POST yet. Then finally the speaker crackles shortly. Bu
tthere are no signs of further booting (well, maybe the disk is not
bootable yet, might be possible).
So how to proceed? How to figure out what might be defective?
Thanks in advance!
Toby

Disconnect the keyboard and hook up a terminal to the serial port.
It can be a PC/laptop with any terminal emulation software, e.g.
HyperTerminal or TeraTerm. Use a null-modem serial cable.
Boot up the Sun and any errors will be displayed on the terminal. |

Thanks for the tip, i actually tried to connect via serial first, but |
somehow got now data on the other end, but now after soldering the right
cable i got to see what's going on. Actually all the post is okay, but
the nvram seems to be defective. No problem so far as i have some of
those nvrams left, but yet i should give that machine a proper
mac-adress(well, i could use that being present in the yet nvram) and
host-id and checksum. Suggestions? I've got a Eeprom-writer, so no
problem to manipulate that nvram also externally.
