I have two drives, HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8400B and LITEON CD-ROM LTN483L . Not
high end but until yesterday both ere working fine.

The 8400B is no longer recognized as a writer. In looking around for a new
one I picked an LG model . After reading model reviews and specs...it looks
to me like me that:

HL-DT-ST is LG
Liteon is also LG.

Am I the last one on earth to catch this one?
