I tried to generate an image of a CD with Isobuster. It gave me 50
something unreadable error messages, clustered in 2 areas of the CD. So
I thought if I tried to copy all of the files in the CD with Windows XP
it should give me an error when it reaches the buggy files. I
Copy/paste all files on the CD to the hard drive and what happens?
Windows copies everything on the CD without informing me of any
problem! I don't understand. Don't the 2048 byte packages of
information on the CD each have an error check code?

What kind of CD ?
Maybe the errors were all in sectors that don't contain file-data ?
For instance if the errors exist only on run-out, link and/or run-in blocks
(packet overhead) between variable packets.

Best Regards,
Peter

The CD is very old, from 1992-1993, though a quality CD at the time. It
is formatted as mixed-mode (data and audio mixed in one single
session), with data track 1 occupying 500 MB and 2 audio tracks
occupying some 10 MB. All the errors occured well inside the data
track. I could calculate this because Isobuster tells you exactly on
what block an error occured. The errors were clustered in the
110,000ish block area (about 215MB, smack in the middle of the data
file), and another towards the end of the data file.
I don't know what run-out, link or run-in blocks means, but I think
that the number of errors (around 50) was so high that some of them
just had to be in the file sector.

Strange.
Were you making a raw image or a "user data" image ?
I guess raw as you were probably including the audio tracks in the image ?
So this would mean that this particular drive behaves differently when the
data is extracted raw ?
As windows would not read the data raw of the disc (This is not a VCD ...
right ? (probably not as that would mean two data tracks at least))
So this is strange as the drive internally needs to read the data raw anyway
to be able to figure out EDC and ECC.
