|
|
I'm trying to clean the CD-ROM drive on my older laptop but cannot get
any of the various media players to play my cleaning disc, which
contains .cda tracks. I've got Win95 installed on this laptop and it
doesn't support the newer OS versions. The cleaning disc runs fine on
my newer laptop, which is running Win2K and a newer version of
Realplayer, so I know the disc is ok. Any suggestions on how to get
this disc to run on my older laptop, which desperately needs a
cleaning. I've already tried installing newer versions of Realplayer
and Windows Media player on my (older) laptop, but these programs won't
load on the Win95 system. Apparently the versions I already have
loaded are the latest ones supported by Win95. If there is no way for
me to run the cleaning disc on my Win95 system is it possible to clean
the drive in some other way? Thanks.

Please describe the symptoms that make you feel the CD drive in the
win 95 system needs cleaning?
What type cleaning CD are you using? The one with a little brush glued
onto the playing surface? |

I use this machine primarily for GPS/mapping purposes and the mapping
software frequently requires data from the CD. A large percentage of the
times that the program tries to get data off the CD it complains that it
can't read the disc. If I simply open and close the CD drive it will
sometimes then read the disc ok. Sometimes that isn't enough and I'll pop
the disc off the spindle and put it back on before closing the drive door.
Eventually some combination of the above will result in the program getting
the data it needs off the disc but I have to do it over and over again, as
(I said before) the program frequently wants to read some data off the CD.
I've already tried cleaning the data disc itself but that has not helped.

Yes, that is the type of cleaning CD I have. |
