|

I've had this PC built and running for 18 months but last 3 or 4 days its
been playing up. Wont reboot or crashing in the middle of an application,
etc. the only way I can get it to recover is change BIOS settings to boot
from CDROM (something it never was good at) and then reinstalling WinXP.
I've tried everything but without success (read as total, for it seems OK
and then refuses to boot a couple of hours later). I replaced the battery
this morning and now at POST it gives me a list of PCI Devices. I never had
this before and cant seem to get rid of it. How do I remove this. a fast
boot using only the harddrives seems to be fruitless. HELP

Hello Robin,
You didn't say which model m/board you are using.
When you say it won't boot, is this from cold or a restart after a crash?
The PCI devices listing will have been there before but the screen
switched to something else before you could see it.
Did you (in the BIOS) set the 'Reset configuration data' to enabled
since the battery change will have lost the previous settings?
This sets up the ECSD.
Have a look at the capacitors, though. If they are leaking brown
electrolyte or have bulging tops then there's the trouble.

System = XP 2500+ on an 8KRA2+ mobo. After replacing the Battery everything
seemed to be OK until this afternoon when suddenly all hell let loose. The
PCI Device list when I switched it back to fast load. but then its all gone
wrong again.
Reinstallation of XP seems to be the only way to get the system running
again. I wasn't sure of the replacement battery so would a brand new one
help.
How do I find out Which of the devices is causing the problem. I swapped
around PSU cables to see if it was a drain on the power but alas it all
seems to be confusing.

I tried Reset Configuration Data on and off without any success.
The Caps are clean though I've read a lot of bad stories about other models
of Epox motherboards.
I can only get it to boot if I select the boot order as CD first and
Harddrive second but don't press any keys and hey presto it boots and runs
fine.
????????????????????

Sounds like there's something wrong with your hard drive. Like it's own
controller is slow to init.

I tried downloading MaxBlast3 to see if there was a diagnostic software on
it but no. software to support LBA and copying across files/data but no
sign of diag. software.
there used to be something in BIOS called SMART but I cant find it in mine.
I Believe with the right software that this will monitor my harddrive and
fore-warn me of an impending failure.
I must keep looking.
Cheers
