|
|
I recently installed a Pioneer A06 DVD writer in my Dell Dimension
4100 (P3/866) and tried making a CD-R to backup some files. I used
the supplied Nero Express and later NTI DC & DVD Maker. When I create
a disk, both products verify the disk as ok. I've run the Nero diagnostics
and everything seems ok. When I use ISOBuster, I can see all the files.
The problem is that Windows 2000 Pro doesn't see the files. It claims
there's no disk in the drive. Win 2K Pro has all updates and bug fixes
applied. I've reinstalled the Windows cd driver.
I read through the FAQ, but haven't found anything that sounds like
a solution.
When I insert a blank CD-R, a dialog pops up asking if I want to format
it, claiming that Windows will not see it if not formatted. On different
disks, I've experimented with both formatting and not formatting the disk.
In both programs, I've looked for any reference to the format used on the
disk. Since there doesn't seem to be a way to force this, I only played
with whether or not to do track or disc writing. I tried both. Based
on the FAQ, it seems like not formatting and using disk (DAO or whatever
it's called) are the best combination.
This should be simple, but I've ended up with a stack of disks that seem
ok but that Windows can't read.
Mike
PS - ISOBuster reports the drive as 106D rev 1.07 fwiw |

What does IsoBuster show below Track in the left pane? Does it show
"udf", "ISO", or ">>>"?

Does the pop up window have program name that popped it up?

I get two Track lines, one with ISO and the second with >>>. When I open
the folders, the ISO one shows shortened file names and the >>> shows
long file names.

No. The title bar simply says "Blank CD/DVD Inserted". Task manager
offers no help in identifying the source of the popup.

Puzzling why win2k doesn't see the files.

The pop up window is the usual packet writer's prompt. See if you find
references to "FileCD", the NTI's companion packet writer.
In any event uninstall NTI, FileCD if found and Nero, and then install
only Nero.

Finally got it - I had it set to multisession, apparently MS only wants to
read single session CD-R.

I give up!!!
I opened the box and put my DVD-ROM back in, in addition to the DVD-RW.
All the disks I've made so far, regardless of which options I've used
to write them, will read (under Windows) in the DVD-ROM. They just won't
read in the DVD-RW!!! The DVD supplied software, such as Nero's utilities,
can see the disks in the DVD-RW. IsoBuster can see them on either drive
as well.
I don't care at this point. I don't mind having two DVD drives - I can
use one to listen to music while the other is doing something else.
And - I can do copies from CD-CD, CD-DVD etc without swapping and
caching. As long as _one_ of the drives will read the backup CDs, I'm
ok.

Double check Master/Slave jumper/cabling.
Delete the drive in Device Manager and let Windows rediscover the drive. |
