I am trying to connect a netra x1 console to a pc using terminal software.
So far I can see the bootup sequence but I can not get the Netra to accept
any keyboard input.
I have the terminal set to 8-1-n, echo on and cr-lf for enter.
I created a cable to connect the db9 with pins 2&3 swapped and I am using a
straight cat5 patch cable.
Can anyone tell me if this is correct?
It behaves like I have to change some other pins.
I looked at the Sun documents but I don't understand what to do with pins 4
& 5. Older posts indicate the same wire [5] on pins 4&5 but I don't know how
to do this.
Any help would be great.
Thanks in advance.

I can. It's not correct. The adapter and cable wiring is described
in the X1 manual that's available in PDF form from the System Handbook
on sunsolve.sun.com:

http://sunsolve.sun.com/data/806/806-5980/pdf/806-5980-11.pdf

The relevant section is titled "The Sun DB-9 Adapter":

Some devices, such as a PC or handheld computer, require you to
use either a male or female DB-9 adapter. The Sun DB-9 adaptor
(part number 530-3100-xx) is a 9-pin DSUB female to 9-POS RJ-45
female adapter. To connect to any device that has a 9-pin serial
connector, use a DB-9 (9-pin) adapter that performs the pin
crossovers listed in TABLE 3-5.

TABLE 3-5 Pin Crossovers for a DB-9 (9-pin) Adapter

RJ45 pin DB-9 pin

RTS 1 ------ 8 CTS
DTR 2 ------ 6 DSR
TxD 3 ------ 2 RxD
GND 4 ------ 5 GND
GND 5 ------ 5 GND (or not connected)
RxD 6 ------ 3 TxD
DSR 7 ------ 4 DTR
CTS 8 ------ 7 RTS
