|
|
I am having a problem getting my Ultra 10 to preform the flash update. I am
running SuSE linux 7.3 for sparc64. I have moved the flash enable jumper to
pins 2 & 3. Copied the flash-update-Ultra510-latest file to the / partition
of the hard disk. I type boot disk /flash-update-Ultra510-latest at the OK
prompt. I get the boot disk information then SILO: on another line I get
file error: Multiple loadable segments in your elf image. and it stops
there. I tried doing a boot cdrom which has the files on it and I get a bad
disk number. The cdrom will boot a SuSE linux cdrom just fine.
Any ideas?

Apparently the SILO loader isn't able to load the image the Solaris
loader (ufsboot) does.

Apparently the SILO loader isn't able to load the image the Solaris

Would be my guess, too. If you have a disk from another machine laying |
around, use it to load the image, and you are good to go.
By the way, I know someone who was trying to get this to work on the
lastest snapshot from the aurora (Redhat based) tree. Perhaps that has
a version of SILO that will work . . . |

I do wish you Linux guys would get the nomenclature right! It's
SPARC-V9, not SPARC64 (the latter is Fujitsu's implementation of
SPARC-V9). sparcv9 is also OK - but not sparc64!

Give the guy a break -- "SPARC64" is exactly what SuSE (and many other
Linux / *BSD vendors) call their 64-bit SPARC implementations. If you
have a problem with that "nomenclature", take it up with them :)

Sorry Rich but have a look at the SuSE web site. Its called sparc64 disto |
there. And the last sparc version SuSE will be doing is 7.3 as I
understand.
I'll try OpenBSD shortly, had some troubles getting X configured with the
Creator 3D card under BSD.
Any way thanks to all for the help I'll try a different disk. Will download
Solaris 9.0 and install that onto a different hard disk and flash the OBP.

Read what the man said.
I am not sure which "many other" you are including, but Splack Linux
works on Sparc V9, (Sun 64 bit). It is NOT supported on Sparc64
(Fujitsu) and this will not be supported until someone supplies me
with a Fujitsu machine for testing. OTOH, it MIGHT work. There are
some subtle differences between the Sun and Fujitsu processors.
The naming conventions are rather confusing.
I am not aware of any Linux distibution which supports (and is tested on)
the Sparc64 (Fujitsu) processor but ICBW.

Hmm...I wonder if you can add an entry to silo.conf to boot the flash
image within linux and boot using SILO? |

Not *technically* maybe :-)
The 'sparc64' came around because earlier 'sparc' implementations were
for the 32-bit v7/v8 processors. It's unfortunate though, yes.
It's unlikely that, even if this was brought to everyone's attention, it
would ever be changed. A similar discussion is about the ethernal
'i386/x86/ia32' thing, and that's unlikely to ever be over :-)

Good idea, I had not tried that. The Ultra 10 runs SuSE 7.3 fine, I had the
case open to add a 375-0006 Dual channel HVD SCSI card to run my RSM 200
disk array and thought I would upgrade from 3.11 to the latest flash. Been
messing with it most of the afternoon until I posted the first message. I
know I did try at SILO boot: /flash-update-Ultra510-latest then I get the
Multiable loadable segments message.
I have a 4 gig hard disk and am downloading the free Solaris 9.0 as I write
this so I might try loading up that disk with Solaris and updating that
way.
Again THANKS for the ideas.

How about trying something like copying the latest flash image file to
/flash-latest, chmod 755 and adding a silo.conf entry such as:
image=/flash-latest
label=flash
Re-run silo and reboot and at SILO: prompt type in flash
I don't guarantee if it'll work..just a wild idea. |

OK, then SuSE (and others presumably) need to change what they
call their distros.

That would be "Solaris 9"; there's no ".0" on the end.
Sorry to be a pedant,

That should work; another idea would be to set up an install server,
and boot the OBP update program from there. But I suspect your
idea of installing Solaris 9 on a spare disk and using that would
be the easiest.
While you're at it, why not give Solaris a spin?
